01. History

History of Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center is located at New York City’s Columbia University, one of the most respected institutions in the United States. It is one of two cancer centers run by the NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Center, a large medical facility associated with the university. Herbert Irving’s “parent” medical center, NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Center, was formed in 1998 when two historic New York City hospitals – New York Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital – merged into one. That merger formed the largest and most comprehensive medical facility in all of New York State.

Columbia University’s foray into cancer research came more than a century ago when, in 1911, the university launched its first Institute for Cancer Research. The birth of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center came in 1972 when the center received funding from the U.S. government’s National Cancer Institute (NCI); it was designated as a comprehensive cancer center in 1979 and remains one of just 41 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. Just three of those are located in New York State.

02. Mesothelioma Care

Mesothelioma Care at Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) features the Columbia University Mesothelioma Center to treat patients with pleural mesothelioma cancer. The Center uses a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients and offers expert care from many departments and specialties. The physicians at the center are constantly performing clinical trials to advance mesothelioma treatment options for patients. One recent trial analyzes the efficacy of pre- and post-operative chemotherapy and radiation treatment for pleural mesothelioma. Other experimental treatments the center offers include vaccine therapy and in vitro chemosensitivity testing.

The center has the ability to offer these cutting edge treatments after receiving over $95 million in cancer research grants. The research conducted at the HICCC is split into three divisions: basic, disease-specific and population-based research, enabling further specialization by researchers. All the research conducted at the HICCC is in the hopes of cancer prevention and improving quality of life for patients battling the disease.
