History of Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center
The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center is a Philadelphia-based comprehensive cancer center, established in 1991. Associated with Thomas Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center employs some 150 investigators who focus their research on the development of new and better treatment options for cancer, including malignant mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Care at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center
Patients seeking care at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University will be treated by Jefferson’s Thoracic Oncology Program. Patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma and other cancers of the chest cavity are treated by a multidisciplinary team of thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, pathologists, radiologists, oncology nurses, social workers and clinical researchers. Patients have access to all team members in one location to minimize the travel required for receiving treatment.
The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center practices standard malignant mesothelioma treatments, alongside advanced treatment techniques. Potential treatments include minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery, robotically assisted esophagectomy, brachytherapy, photodynamic therapy, transcervical thymectomy, tracheal and bronchial sleeve resection and interventional bronchoscopy.
During their treatment journey, patients will receive care from multiple departments to ensure comfort and high quality of care. Nurses, nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, social workers, dietitians and other team members work together to cater to individual patient needs.
